Breast Asymmetry Correction

The majority of women in the United Kingdom have breasts which are slightly different in size and shape. However, for a minority, the differences in size and shape can be extreme. Marked breast asymmetry results in embarrassment about appearance both in and out of clothing. It also causes major problems when selecting clothes. Many women resort to the use of inserts to try and achieve some degree of symmetry while wearing a bra. Although this is a good solution for some, many women find the inserts are inconvenient as they shift around or even fall out - especially during strenuous activities. Surgical treatment is the only way in which permanent correction of breast asymmetry can be achieved. During your consultation, the surgeon will discuss the ways in which this can be achieved. Surgery is often very complex and may require either augmentation of one breast with an artificial (silicone) implant with reduction or mastopexy (breast uplift) of the other breast. For many women a combination of several different techniques is necessary to achieve the desired result. Although the surgery will leave permanent scars, these will usually fade with time and become inconspicuous. The exact type of scarring will depend on the exact procedures performed to achieve your particular aims. Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and usually requires admission to hospital overnight.
