Choosing Your Surgeon
Look for the FRCS (Plast) qualification when making your choice of surgeon. All of our surgeons have this special accreditation, signifying six additional years of rigorous plastic surgery training and examination. This qualification is the bench mark for exclusive entry onto the Specialist Register of UK accredited Plastic Surgeons of the General Medical Council (GMC). Further more, all our surgeons are required to be members of either *BAPS and or *BAAPS, the only accredited associations representing UK trained surgeons. High standards are maintained as membership is restricted to surgeons with a FRCS (Plast) accreditation and a current (or previous) NHS appointment. Mt Vernon Cosmetic Surgeons works extensively with major private Hospitals groups and NHS Trusts, specifically registered with the Healthcare Commission. Typically, these hospitals will only accept surgeons who have current NHS appointments (or have previously been NHS Consultants) and are on the GMC Specialist Register. Our priority is to safeguard clients interests and maintain the highest standard in health care.Note: BAPS is the British Association of Plastic Surgeons. BAAPS, is the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and is recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons to be the only legitimate body representing the field of Cosmetic Surgery. Find out more at their respective websites at www.bapras.org.uk and www.baaps.org.uk.
Meeting your surgeon
There is a fee for the consultation with your surgeon. This is because your initial meeting is actually with the consultant plastic surgeon that would perform your operation if you decided to go ahead with surgery and obviously you can expect to pay for their time on a private basis. Many commercial clinics or high street cosmetic surgery companies offer free consultations.
Free consultations usually only get you a meeting with a patient advisor or nurse councilor who is simply a sales person on commission who's task is to talk you into having surgery. At Mt Vernon Cosmetic Surgeons there is no pressure and you do not meet with a salesperson or nurse.
Your initial consultation with your surgeon is an important part of the process. Your surgeon will discuss in detail your expectations from the surgery and whether these can be met. Your suitability for the procedure in terms of your general health will also be assessed and a discussion will take place identifying any risks and complications which are inherent in any surgical procedure. Only after this process will you be able to make an informed decision about whether to proceed. In many cases a second consultation takes place to confirm your decision and answer any further questions after you have had time to consider your options. (Please note we only charge for the initial consultation).
If you do not feel ready to commit to a consultation with a surgeon we regularly hold free open days and information evenings where you can learn about the various cosmetic procedures, meet our surgeons on an informal basis and get a feel for the high level of service we offer. Please see our events page for more infomation.
