Inverted Nipple Correction

Inversion of the nipples is a common complaint and normally harmless. Women often describe how their nipples became inverted as they went through puberty and their breasts enlarged. Usually, both nipples are affected - occasionally just one side. The degree of inversion also varies. Although the vast majority of cases are harmless, inversion of the nipples which develops suddenly (weeks to months) can sometimes indicate the presence of a breast cancer. During your consultation the surgeon will determine whether your inverted nipples are harmless (the majority) or something which will require further investigation. Although the vast majority of cases of inverted nipples are harmless, they can cause considerable distress. Having inverted nipples can make it difficult to breast feed. They can also lead to feelings of inadequacy or loss of femininity. Most cases of inverted nipples respond to non-surgical treatment. However, if these treatments have failed to work for you then surgical treatment may be appropriate. Surgery will leave you with a small scar around the nipple although the scar will fade and become inconspicuous with time. Treatment can usually be carried out under local anaesthetic on an out-patient basis.
