Mr. Adriaan Grobelaar - Mt Vernon Surgeon MBChB MMed(Plast) FCS(SA)(Plast) FRCS(Plast) - Consultant Plastic Surgeon
Mr Adriaan Grobelaar
I completed my higher surgical training first in General Surgery and then in Plastic Surgery which was
carried out at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, where I obtained the South African
Fellowship in Plastic Surgery from the South African College of Surgeons in 1993 as well as a higher
research degree in Plastic Surgery from the University of Cape Town in 1993.
In 1994 I undertook an International Society of Aesthetic Surgery approved Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship with Mr. F. V. Nicolle in London. Further Plastic Surgery training was carried out at Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood, Middlesex.
I have been a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at the Mount Vernon Hospital Reconstructive, Plastic Surgery & Burns Unit from 1996 until October 2006 when the Mount Vernon Unit moved to its new home at the Royal Free Hospital Hampstead NHS Trust where I am now based as Programme Director & Clinical Lead.
Facial re-animation surgery, lower limb reconstruction as well as breast reconstruction constitutes my special interests in my NHS practice whilst in private practice I undertake all aspects of cosmetic surgery in addition to reconstructive and microsurgery. I have published more than 100 papers in the medical literature and have written several chapters in textbooks on plastic surgery as well as the cosmetic surgery section in the Microsoft Encarta encylopædia.
I am heavily involved in Plastic Surgery training and research. I was awarded a Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England for my research entitled 'A new surgical solution in surgical treatment of facial paralysis.'
I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University College of London.
