Little miss perfect
With schoolgirls opting for breast enlargements and nose jobs, and parents readily agreeing to (and paying for) the operations, has the craze for plastic surgery finally gone too far? Sarah Ebner meets three teenagers who claim a scalpel changed their lives.
Aimee Cookson is standing in front of a mirror that hangs in her bedroom. Wearing jeans and a tight top and surrounded by photographs of her friends, she looks like a typical, fashion-conscious teenager. Except, that is, for her fake breasts.
‘Kids at school used to call me “Pancake”, or even “Holland”,’ says Aimee in her strong Mancunian accent. ‘I was always small. I wore padded bras and felt like a little girl next to my mates. I was only just a 34A, now I’m a big C and feel a lot better.’ Aimee, who decided to have breast implants when she was only 16, finally went under the surgeon’s knife in May last year – two months after her 18th birthday.
Her boyfriend was all in favour of the surgery and her grandmother, with whom she lives, gave her £2,000 towards the £4,000 cost of the operation. ‘It was a lot of money,’ admits Aimee. ‘I thought, “I could get a really nice car for that.” But then I thought, “I could get my breasts done and buy a cheap car instead.”’
