The USA saw the launch of a new magazine, New You, which is calling itself The Official Magazine of Cosmetic Surgery.

The thick, glossy magazine will promote the practice of cosmetic surgery “so that people who are thinking about it today will take action tomorrow.”

Dr. Patrick McMenamin, president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, is the “medical editor in chief” of New You, and writes in his introduction, “It is written about real patients, real cosmetic procedures and real cosmetic surgeons.”

Subjects for articles include safety of place, “misconceptions of vanity,” the imperfect pursuit of perfection through breast surgery and testimonials (accompanied by attractive “after” images) by women who have undergone procedures such as a mini face-lift and facial fat graft.

The final third of the magazine is devoted to locating the surgeon nearest you.

Football fans wanting to visit the greatest football tournament on earth, are being offered packages which include plastic surgery operations.

Packages include cosmetic surgery, spa treatments, plus accommodation while they recover – and guided tours also thrown in.

Cape Town-based medical tourism company Surgical Bliss has several World Cup packages on offer, ranging from breast augmentation packages for R45, 000, an eye lift package for about R21 000, a tummy tuck package for R45,000 to in vitro fertilisation.

Johannesburg-based, Medi-Sculpt clinic, a “medical aesthetic centre”, is about to launch its own World Cup “Liquid Face Lift and Safari Package” at a cost of R12 000, said owner, Dr. Anushka Reddy. This included “Botox and two dermal fillers, and spa treatments”, plus a visit to a Lion sanctuary where patients “can feed giraffes and play with lion cubs”.

Anyone thinking of taking on such a package should think very carefully about it. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) strongly advises against such packages and going abroad for procedures as the level of after care and family support are often found lacking.

A new, quick procedure for altering the shape of a nose has been developed. Restylane is a water-based filler, and a synthetic reproduction of hyaluronic acid, a substance found in living organisms. Until recently its main use has been to plump lips and fill crow’s feet, but the new procedure involves injecting the bridge of the nose to fill in dents, and the tip, so it appears perkier. Effects wear off within 18 months.

Collagen implants have been used to give women fuller lips and the “Angelina Jolie” pout for a long time now. But a new surgical procedure being pioneered in Florida produces the same effect by taking a muscle graft from your neck.

Why is this good? Surgeons find that people like the idea that there is nothing artificial about them. Recently Ukmedix News reported on a tummy tuck/ breast augmentation procedure which involves taking fat from the stomach and injecting it into the breasts. In the future all plastic surgery may involve shifting parts of the bodies to other places.
