Tattoo Removal

Skin tattoos are created by deliberately placing deposits of various coloured pigments (as inks or dyes) into the skin for decorative or cosmetic purposes. Tattoos may also occur accidentally. For example, an explosion or a fall can cause a tattoo if metal particles, dirt or soot become lodged in the skin. Lasers are used to remove the tattoo by fragmenting these pigment deposits allowing them to disperse. The success of the treatment depends on the colour and depth of placement of the pigment in the skin. If a large area is being treated a local anaesthetic may be required. Multiple treatments are usually needed with each treatment six to eight weeks apart. Significant fading of the tattoo can continue for up to six months after laser treatment.
